NATO Jets Shoot Down Foreign Drone Over Latvia
Latvia's National Armed Forces confirmed the intercept in an official statement: "NATO fighter jets participating in the Baltic Air Policing mission shot down a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Latvian airspace in the Latgale region as a result of Russian electronic warfare activity."
The armed forces had earlier flagged active airspace threats across the municipalities of Aluksne, Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne, subsequently confirming that those threats had been neutralized.
"The Latvian National Armed Forces, together with NATO allies, continuously monitor the airspace to ensure an immediate response capability to potential threats," the statement added.
Riga noted that its military had already moved to reinforce air defense capabilities along the country's eastern border through the deployment of additional units — a precautionary measure that proved timely given Monday's incursion.
The armed forces also issued a pointed warning that similar drone intrusions into or near Latvian airspace should be expected to recur for as long as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to rage, underscoring the persistent and evolving threat posed to NATO's northeastern flank.
